The Merino Wool guide

FIBRE
The fleece of merino sheep, a breed developed over centuries for exceptionally fine wool. It is shorn each year, and the fibre regrows.
FINENESS (MICRON)
Merino is measured in microns too. Fine merino is much finer than ordinary wool, though on average slightly coarser than good cashmere.
WARMTH AND MOISTURE
Merino insulates well and moves moisture away from the skin, so it stays comfortable as temperatures change through the day.
DURABILITY
A resilient fibre that recovers its shape and handles regular wear well, which makes it a good choice for everyday wraps, throws and knitwear.
CONSTRUCTION
Weight, weave and finish decide how a merino piece drapes and how warm it feels. Heavier weaves hold their shape; lighter ones drape softly.

What to look for

  • A composition label that states the percentage of wool
  • A soft feel that is not prickly against the neck
  • An even, dense weave with clean edges
  • A weight suited to how you will use it: light for travel, heavier for cold evenings

How to care for it

  • Air between wears
  • Follow the care label on your piece; ours are dry clean only
  • Dry flat, never tumble dry
  • Store clean, folded, with cedar or lavender to deter moths
